Cooper Tools

The display of Cooper Tools in the depot/museum represents a part of the estate of Mrs. Leona Babcock of Siren, Wisconsin. The tools were donated to the museum by Raymond Giles of Loomis, California. The tools originally belonged to Ira Van Guilder (Mrs. Babcock’s father) who had worked as a cooper in Cannon Falls, Minnesota in the late 1880s. A heading factory in Frederic, from 1905 to the end of World War I, used tools similar to those displayed to manufacture the ends (headers) of casks and barrels, which were then shipped by train to barrel manufacturers.
